The Nehru trophy boat race is held on the second Saturday of August every year. The race is held in the massive Vembanad lake, east of the alappuzha town. The boats of all sizes compete in different race events. The most prestigous and interesting in the competition is "Chundan Vallam". The boat is with 100 rowers, 4 helmsmen and has 25 cheerleaders is decorated with colorful umbrellas. The Nehru Cup Snake Boat Race at Punnamada Kayal is a major attraction for the tourist.
