Kuttanad is famous for farming. Kuttanad is the one and only one region in the world where farming is done below sea level. The most of the land is under water throughout the major part of the year. The water rises to submerge most of the farm area during the rains / rainy season. During the rains, the top soil and minerals from the highlands are washed away and deposited here at Kuttanad making the Kuttanad area highly fertile. At other times, the farm is deliberately flooded in a controlled manner to facilitate rice farming.

For viewing the Kuttanad area, one can take a boat to Changanacherry. The journey will be around 2 1/2 hours so that he/she can watch the areas as the boat route passes through Kuttanad.
