Open Source Software can change the world for the better |
Zyxware Technologies a firm based out of Trivandrum, Kerala, is
pushing forward with the concept of "Open Source for a better world".
To prove their point they have developed a very useful application and
have released it for free under the GNU General Public License. The
application is a web based application that allows hospitals to report
cases of diseases at the point the patient is treated at the hospital.
This results in almost real time collection of data about diseases
occurring in a state and helps in taking necessary preventive steps to
fight the spread of the disease.
Additionally the system maps the collected information about the
occurrences of the disease on a map of the state to aid in easy visual
analysis of the situation. This is done using Google Maps API which is
provided for free by Google. The system has basic analytical and
reporting capabilities built into it. Since it is released under GNU
GPL this allows for anybody to download the source code and modify and
use it.
By releasing this software which could cost several thousands of
dollars in the international market, the company is hoping to
highlight on two specific points - a) It is possible to increase the
efficiency of government systems by strategically using open source
technologies, b) Youth of today should take more risks in trying out
their ideas and create innovative solutions that address todays needs
and succeed in the process.
More information about the software can be found at the site
